100%. No! 1000%!!! One thing that is totally unpopular but I would love to see more of would be more basketball books. Looking forward to the Bball Feelings: the book!
Beautifully written. I’m also sometimes in the headspace of “hey they can have the mai stream media” just do what you do and those who want something thoughtful with story telling and style and grace will find you. The cool part for me when I was younger was searching for new book and magazines. Now most of us just want it compiled and given to us. It’s weaken the viewer and morphed the creators. But I’m thankful to have found Basketball Feelings.
I’ve never thought to associate that good feeling of browsing bookstores and coming up with a gem as something akin to grace, but it really does fit. Thanks for that Dez, and for reading!
This! Right here! And all of the comments...we want the long form, slow burn writing. The good stuff, like A Sense of Where You Are, Foul: the Connie Hawkins Story, David Halberstam's The Breaks of the Game. And a real paper magazine about basketball...no betting lines, no sneakerheads, and only a little analytics. I want the magic of basketball writing when I was a kid, but about today's players: game stories, biographies, team histories. Some of us still want the album version not just the sampled hook.
hmm. is this issue really more on the on-air/big byline talent or on the media execs that are shaping the whole narrative by hiring and firing the content creators and making all the programming decisions?
Like I said, there isn’t one singular cause/effect, nor is it at the feet of any singular established media to overhaul a system that’s swung hard to accelerate aggregation. I think we’re all mourning the loss of the same thing, but established media can do it in retrospect, while newer or younger media will never have experienced the thing they’re mourning.

I’m with you on books and thank you! That’s great encouragement for me.

Some of your best work, Katie. Clear, and extremely precise.

Beautifully said, Katie. I couldn’t agree more.
