As writers, we can think big, we can make connections, we can make intuitive decisions and play in the unknown a little bit.

Though he’s writer for this newsletter multiple times, and we’ve known each other in the loose but still familiar world of the internet for years, I didn’t meet Alan Chazaro until this past All-Star. Alan, who writes deeply and beautifully about culture, music, food, and basketball, grew up in The Bay and its influence echoes in much of his work, so it felt fitting (and lucky) to me that we met there.

We talked about Alan’s recent move from The Bay to Mexico, how his roots in The Bay factor into his sensibilities and his work, his time as a public high school teacher and poetry professor, and the “6th man mentality” of working as a freelance writer and the privilege of it.
