I’m just annoyed by the stakeholder class of the league, who we’re always hailing as the best and brightest minds in the history of the business. Oh my god, they’re the masters of the universe, masters of industry — and they can’t figure out how to have less games and still make money off of this incredible product? That irks me.
One of the highlights of Summer League for me this past year was, on a lap of a crowded media party, the undulating sea of people under purple club lighting parted and Wosny Lambre was on the other side. We hugged like people who hadn’t seen each other in years and proceeded to talk about Summer League — what it really was (a feeling), who understood it (us, well, and a solid group of other people). I remember telling Wos how relieved I was to know he felt the same way I did, recognition like a secret handshake. The drinks are strong at those parties, but the spirit of Summer League is stronger.
