Shoot for the moon. Get more guys out of Greece that don’t know a thing about basketball. Bring ‘em over here. Talk about smoothies. I’m down with it. The NBA is not ever going to be right, and that’s why we dig it so much.
My guess is you might be as shocked as I was that I started this episode out talking to Kelly Dwyer about baseball, but Kelly wrote such a beautiful line in one of his recent newsletters — on the MLB lockout — that it became the spark for the rest of our conversation.
Specifically, Kelly wrote about the “swishing athleticism that marked the outfields of my adolescence”, and it made me think about the concept of eras in sports. What makes them? Is it the people, a style of play, generational culture, an aesthetic? Can we know when an era is shifting, or what era we’re in, or does it have to be qualified in hindsight? We applied all this to the NBA.
