Even though Silver worded it poorly, I found the outrage over the highlights comment a little disingenuous. As you say, everyone interacts with the NBA differently, but everyone also consumes highlights to at least a degree -- and for many people, it is a large one. Translatability to social media is a big part of the NBA's popularity with kids and young adults (to whatever extent that is).
The caption on the NBA’s Instagram “watch guide” reads like one of those red yarn detective boards connecting a bunch of suspects in a crime show not an enticement to tune in.
